Starting 2016 as I mean to go on.
After a injury ridden 2015 season in which I completed just 2 races, I intended to match that stat in a single weekend… and having had a chest infection and barely ridden the bike for 3 weeks I wasn’t expecting fantastic results.
Saturday – Manchester and District TTA series race 1
A sporting 10 course racing from Goostrey to Chelford and back with a slight headwind on the way out. As for most early season races, my nerves were on edge from the moment I woke leaving me with a heart rate like a hummingbird and getting worn out just sat on the start line.
A poorly paced 1st half of the race and getting caught behind a tractor on the way back left me with a bit left in the legs coming over the finishing line. Clocking in at 25:09. A bit disappointed having clocked my slowest ever 10 time, I consoled myself with a brew and cake back at HQ and checked the times.
Sunday – Crewe Clarion Wheelers 16.5 mile Hilly
A proper sporting course with a decent amount of climbing, the course profile showed a slight rolling climb from Nantwich to Audlem followed by the main drag in the middle third of the race on the climb to Woore. I went into today with a goal time of anything under 45 mins.
Having checked this out I paced the race a lot better with my power just starting to fade when hitting the top of the climb, having caught a few riders. Taking the left from Woore back to Nantwich the first bit of the descent was sheltered and fast, which then opened out into a slightly unexpected headwind. This meant having to really work at holding a full aero position with fading legs. Hitting the final bank I nearly had to drop off the big ring to make it over the brow before the final ½ mile dash to the finish.
