One of Team JMC’s newest members recounts his epic racing debut….
Having been intent on just enjoying the Horwich Carnival Atmosphere, on arrival I was persuaded to enter the junior road race by my coach. As I had not brought my kit, I was whisked into ‘Horwich Pound Land’ for a pair of children’s underpants to race in and keep my nappy in situ. Swapping these for my jeans I found myself hand in hand with my coach on the start line and ready to compete.
I went off a little too hard and after reaching the 0.75m point hit the wall, my coach denying my request to be carried and encouraging me to finish under my own steam. After a slight disagreement at this juncture, I pushed for home and the crowds went bananas as I reached the finish line in a new PB of 13 minutes. 91st/95 and first in my age group. After an ice lolly recovery and with my pride intact I headed home for some much needed CBeebies.
