Team JMC racer Jacqui Simcock took part in last weekend’s Whinlatter Enduro mountain bike race.
I started this year’s Whinlatter with some anticipation as it had drawn a record number of entries, 500 for the Full Enduro (32 miles) and 100 for the Half Enduro (17 miles). Being a Ramsbottom local I tend to gain ground on the continual steep up hill sections and it was the same again this year as after only about 40 mins folk were starting to lag. The high 20°C temperatures were also taking their toll. About an hour in I started to experience some mechanical issues as my chain had twisted, firstly jumping on the hilly sections and then also on the forest tracks. By the time I reached the Half Enduro finish point the chain issue had got that bad that I had to drop out despite feeling pretty strong. The officials kindly let my time register for the Half Enduro, resulting in me being the 1st female over the line and the 1st female vet out of a total of 133 finishers. A very pleasing result in the end and a good reminder to have spare chain links handy!
